Jamu Seller

We invited a Jamu seller to our class. Her name is Mbak Parni. She sells jamu everyday. She had been taught by her mother. Most of people in her family are jamu sellers. Jamu is traditional medicines made of herbs. The ingredients could be ginger, tamarind, sambiloto, mint leaf, brown sugar, honey, rice or betel leaf.

Jamu could help people if we get sick. Like coughing, bone aching, fever etc. It is good also for body stamina, also good for children. Mba Parni has to start making her jamu from 3 am then she starts making the jamu. She washes all the ingredients, grinding, squeezing and the last is boiling it. She separates the the jamu into different bottle because it has different use. We invited other classes to come and watch this event. Everybody tried and taste the jamu. Most people like it. The second photo is when I had a play as a jamu seller, I wore a wig, I had to play as a pregnant woman. We wrote our own conversations first between a jamu seller and customer. The task was to convince the customer that jamu was a good product to have. Dyllan

We have been learning about entrepreneurs and having a business. We shared what happens in a market place where people bargain for the price. We then looked at something that was common in the past which was bartering. Barter is a trading. It is different like we want to buy something and we pay with money. We divided into two groups and made a play to show this. In our play there was a man who wanted to trade his goat with a snake but there was difficulties because the characters spoke different languages.   Alaka

Spelling Bee

In class we had a practice Spelling Bee. We needed to select the best spellers to join a JASIS Spelling Bee in Jakarta next week. Our class spelling bee was in teams. We had to use our brains in different ways because we needed to spell words backwards, count how many letters in each word, replace vowels with names and animal sounds and much more. If we got the word incorrect it was ok we were not eliminated. 

ISA TESTS (INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS' ASSESSMENT TEST)

 Last week students sat for the ISA tests in the Grade 3-5 class. This included Mathematics Part A and B, reading, narrative writing and persuasive writing. Students reflected on their performance at the end of the test, shared what questions were challenging and what part of the test they felt they did best at. They also wrote a letter to grade 2 students giving some advice on what to expect when they do the ISA test for the first time in 2016. Below is an example of a letter;

 We had our ISA test. You would probably think oh no, I'm going to fail but you should just not worry, take it easy, chill bro, chill because if you get worried the pressure is on, so just calm down and if you do the test it is actually not really that hard for you to do. The main thing is to relax. If you are stuck on a question skip it and then go back to it.

 Reward systems for children. Are they a good idea?

Our current central idea is, "Humans create systems that support human endeavor and  enterprise." While investigating the word SYSTEM we discovered different human systems but also a reward system. We recorded both the negative and positive for parents using a reward system with their children. I wonder what parents think and will they be similar or different when the students are parents in the future?

2015 - 2016

Holiday story

I was showing the class about my holiday in Australia and what the temperatures were for different days.

For everyday I found the temperature and also if it was windy, sunny or rainy and I recorded it in a book. Avi

Spelling

I used a dictionary to solve my word problems and to find out the meaning. I had to write 5 reasons of why these words can be misspelled. One of the reasons was because of the pronunciation of the word. Jordi

 

We had a spelling list so we had to fill in 15 words for a test. We also had to figureout what 5 of the words meant. It was easy (I think) for me! : D  That is it!  

Nathan

We were writing a responds about the thinking cards. We each had a piece of paper and we had quarter it into four sections the we had to write responds about the thinking card and stick it onto the thinking card poster. Alaka

Taste Test!

At 2.30 pm the Banana Group made Bananas dipped in chocolate. First Robin prepared the bananas and Yejin. I  prepared the chocolate and Jordi prepared the lemons. If you are wondering why we used lemons it is because if we don't put lemon juice on top of the banana, the bananas will become brown.

Most people liked it. Gaby

We made a fruit cake. We used watermelon and we cut it to half and we cut the kiwi, apple, peeled orange and strawberry. We put that together and stored it in the freezer for 3 nights. We took it out and shared it to students in my class. It was hard to cut and some people didn't like it because it was hard to bite. Tama

 Ice Cold Lemonade

In this picture we were making and giving the lemonade to give to the class. Some part were sometimes hard to make but actually it was not hard to make. Most of the class liked it. To make it it takes about 15 minutes. All we used were lemons, water, sugar, and soda water and also baking soda. Avi

This is the class display showing our reflections on the 3 entrepreneur groups taste test sessions. The red light shows what did not go well, the green shows what was great and the orange light shows what suggestion will make the product better. We are looking forward to another taste test session next week and hope the groups considered all the class reflections.

Tama and Alaka brought our watermelon cake. We had to eat and say if it is good or not. The watermelon cake was hard and it was hard to cut also. When we ate it it was too cold. I think some people liked it and some people didn't like  it because it tasted weird. Robert

Chinese New Year

I was first watching this with Clay's brother, Caelan. We took a picture of our class showing off our Chinese costumes. We celebrate it every year at school. As you can see the kids down there in the picture were playing with the dragons.It's actually them giving angpao/money in a red envelope for good luck in the future. Dyllan

We had to read a text and answer questions together. This was for test practice because we will have a real test soon.

In class we were testing each other our spelling words and math problems. In math we learned about discount. When we buy something and the we get discount means we get less price.

Avi and me were working together at the ISA test practice. So we can be ready and be exact for the real test.

 

We were playing a mini game at the carpet with  the class and we liked it. Well its actually a some sort of a brain testing game where you have to include math and also remember when to say buzz and when to say a number.

Earthquake experience

 Ms. Donna came to our class to talk about her experience for having an earthquake in New Zealand.It was 5.6 SR in 90 seconds.The land was cracked and some buildings damaged. 





 

 Wayang Golek/Traditional wooden puppet
 
We had a Wayang Golek puppeteer visit our school. We all watched the performance and it was hilarious.Everybody liked the character "Cepot" and we got a chance to ask questions.I asked to the Dalang (puppeteer) what is your favorite character of Wayang and he said it was Cepot because he is the funniest one.


Design and flying paper planes

Alaka was telling everyone about her paper plane instruction. She told us different things about different paper planes.







Spelling

 

We were practicing our spelling words. If we got averaged over 90% in our scores until the end of the term we could get a reward and go to the cinema together.I got some corrects and some wrong. I was testing Robin in the picture and he tested me. 

 
Middle School Exhibition

When we visit the Gr 6-9's boards, we were holding a clip board filled with questions and testing out experiments. My personal favorites were Kenta's and Woo Hyun's boards. We had a ton of fun going around with our clip boards testing one another!  

Newspaper construction 

 

 

 We made a chair using only newspaper and sticky tape. First we rolled the newspaper and made it into small sticks. It was hard at the beginning but finally we made it and it held objects like a teddy bear and  Lego man. We then visited the ELC2 students to share our designs with them.

Here we are just finished our lunch at "Ricebowl" and are just about ready to go to the movies. The three reasons we had this activity were; because it is the end of the semester and it replaces a class party, because it is a farewell for Nico who will be moving to another school next semester and because we achieved over a 90% average for our weekly spelling tests!

 I was running with my friends at school.
Mr. Scott asked us to run in the soccer field. We had to run with a partner and the winner is the one who can climb the tree stump. I feel happy after running. (Nico)


  Unit of inquiry 2 -  Central idea - Maps allow people to understand their place in the world
 Grade 3 - 5 have been learning about Mapping. These are some activities they did at school.

 

Robin and me were searching for the volcano places. We found some and we made them in Microsoft Word and we had to place them in the exact place they are in. This is about volcano mapping. (Jordi)

In Bahasa Indonesia  we also learn about interesting places to visit and showed them on an Indonesian map. (Dyllan)

We were doing area so we made a COUNTRY. Each country has a different amount of area to do with our partners. We replaced the blocks with patterns. (Avi)

The area of objects
We were learning about how to measure the area of objects. We measured the things we brought to school. Rectangles, triangles, squares, circles and then we measured them  and recorded the area in our math book.

 Coffee Painting

 This is the coffee painting inspired by Mohammad. He comes from Burma and went to Australia. He stayed at a detention center, so we did the same thing and here is the picture of our paintings Mohammad used coffee to paint because there were no paint in the detention center. (Dyllan)

Bahasa Indonesia

We were talking about the climate changes. Climate changes happens when people cut trees because less oxygen and less atmosphere which causes the atmosphere to over heat and weather changes. (Jordi)

Art - Aurora 

 

With Robin I was painting the Aurora. It has 2 names the 2nd one is called the Northern lights .

We did rainbow painting. Looks awesome! (Jordi)
