Earth Day activities

Burning rubber

Did you know nearly 500 new cars and 3,000 motorbikes join Jakarta traffic DAILY? That is a lot of burning rubber. What actually happens to the tyres when they can no longer be used on vehicles? We researched some ways to recycle and then came up with our own ideas and creation. Some of our ideas included: a boxing target, dolphin training, rolling toy, trampoline, swings, floating rings and gardening pots, a birthday cake, a zombie mask, a goal shooting target and a huge donuts

Batik bits and pieces
In preparation for Ibu Kartini Day we decided to use off cuts of batik to decorate a picture frame image of Ibu Kartini Drawings. I wonder what Earth Day issues Kartini had to deal with 100 years ago?

Pak Iyan the bakso seller, How do you reduce, reuse and recycle?
As part of our unit we have invited food vendors to talk about production, distribution and consumption. Students prepared questions relating to reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are three highlighted questions:
Reduce - Do you make a little or a lot of bakso every day?
Reuse - How many times do you reuse the water to clean the dishes?
Recycle – When you throw away your rubbish is any of it taken by a recycle collector?

Grade 3 to 5 2014 - 2015

Our last unit of inquiry has the central idea,
"There are many different belief systems each with their own traditions, rituals and behaviours."

Nasi Tumpeng
Initially we focused on an Indonesian traditional meal, "Nasi Tumpeng." We did some research and asked local staff members about the celebration and meaning. We worked in small groups to create our own "Nasi Tumpeng"considering how to construct  the 3 dimensional cone. From there we looked at measuring circumference and diameter of the rice. This would be important information to give to someone who wanted to prepare to the exact measurement of the customer. Two students had the task of interviewing 10 staff members. They even got to take a "Selfie"after the interview. They thought Pak Gatot and Pak Tio were the best selfi models.

Below the students considered the learner profiles highlighted in related to "Nasi Tumpeng."
Thinker: Make the Nasi Tumpeng is more creative and traditional.
Knowledgeable:  Knowing how Nasi Tumpeng looks like.
Open minded: Nasi Tumpeng is a traditional food in Java and you should appreciate the culture and food.
By Dyllan , Robert and Robin
We need to be respectful to Indonesia’s culture because it is not nice to say bad things to Indonesia.
We need to be knowledgeable about the different foods in Nasi Tumpeng so that we don’t just make random food.
We need to be a thinker because we need to think before we act about saying stuff about Nasi Tumpeng.
By Gaby, Rahma and Clay
Thinker- We used thinking skills and we made the Nasi Tumpeng.
Open-minded – We are knowledgeable because we know what is on the dish.
By Feri, Prince and Avi
Open-minded: We are open-minded because we helped other people and they helped us.
Thinker – We wanted to make it small so we can make all the small details.
Knowledgeable – We are knowledgeable because we made the nasi tumpeng and we knew how to do it.
By Alaka, YeJin, Nathan and Jordi

Students made a dialogue between a customer and "nasi tumpeng"seller.

Please see one example below. This was read out at assembly:

Customer: I want

Nasi tumpeng maker: A nasi tumpeng that is 39cm high and 10cm wide, 6cm for diameters and the radius is 3cm, is it right?
Customer: Yes how did you know.
Nasi tumpeng maker: Magic
Customer: Never mind I want it delivered at 3.00AM and delivered at Villa Bogor Indah. How much will it cost?
Nasi tumpeng maker: RP250.000
Customer: Ok but remember 3AM

BUDDHISTS
On Tuesday there will be a public holiday to celebrate Hari Waisak. This is a Buddhist celebration. Students watched a short film and did some research to find out more about Buddhists. These are some facts they found out:

Sidhartha Gautama born as a prince in northern India 2,500 years ago.
His father the king didn't let him go outside because he didn't want him to see any sadness.
*  Sidartha left his palace to search for happiness.
* He shaved his head and only wore an orange robe
* He meditated under a bodhi tree and after several days found his enlightenment how to be happy.
* He taught his enlightenment to many people and had many followers.
* The image of Buddha is Sidharta.
* He died at the age of 80 in a sideways lying position. (This is why many Buddha's are in a lying position)
* Waisak day is to celebrate Sidhartha's birth, enlightenment and death.
* Hari Waisak is celebrated at home and in the temples.
* Waisak appears on a full moon.
* When Buddhists worship it is called Puja.
* 96% of Cambodia is Buddhist.
* Buddhists don't believe there is a god but they follow the ways of Sidhartha.
* Monks devote their life to Buddha by meditating and doing good to others.

Buddha Sketch by grade 3 - 5

Bogor Palace

At Bogor Palace I saw very interesting things inside the Palace. And we looked the video to educate us more about presidents. (Avi).
The Palace is really big and really nice. We learned about the presidents when we were at the museum (Robin).
At the palace we interviewed the guide when was the palace build. We didn't get to meet Pak Jokowi because he was in Jakarta (Dyllan).
At Istana Bogor we saw the Presidents  museums and I asked the tour guide to go into the audio visual room. I liked it a lot as well as looking at the president's medals & uniforms! (Nathan).

I saw big trees and deers at the Palace. There were the previous Indonesian Presidents. (YeJin)
I found the  previous statues of  Presidents of Indonesia, the first one is Pak Soekarno, second is Pak Suharto, third is Pak Habiebie, forth is Gusdur, the fifth is Ibu Megawati and sixth is Pak Susilo Bambang Yudoyono (SBY) (Jordi).

At The Palace we went to the museum. The guide told us about Garuda symbol and we watched a movie about the history of presidents of Indonesia. It was very interesting (Robert).

I went to the Presidential Museum. I took a photo next to the picture of SBY to look like I am the next President. I wish! (Gaby).
Maths- Diameter and circumference and estimation
Students worked in partners to find objects that could be measure the circumference and diameter. They also found objects that could only have the circumference measured. The next part was to compare measurements with other groups and from this information match the missing diameter measurement through estimation.

Expander Numerals
We recorded large numbers up to 10 million and then read these aloud to partners. We rated their listening skills to see if they could identify what position the numerals were. e.g. 23,698,751. What is the value of 8? the answer is 8 thousand.

Class Dance

We did Boya Dance at school.  We danced in front of the parents. Everybody dressed up with cool clothes.
